Please join fellow CSA members this Saturday for a TEDxManhattan “Changing the Way We Eat” viewing party.

TEDxManhattan “Changing the Way We Eat” is a full day of talks broken into three sessions – Issues, Impact, and Innovation – exploring the state of our food system and our progress towards sustainability. We will be showing the live webcast of the talks throughout the day.

Deb and Pete Kavakos of Stoneledge Farm will be speaking during the lunch break, as well as Chelsea CSA lead coordinator Lillian Quartuccia. Please bring your own lunch.

Food and Farm Bill

Many of us became CSA members because we care deeply about where our food comes from and how it is grown. The Farm Bill currently being hashed out in congress could have a great impact on those issues for all Americans.

Just Food (of which we are a member) sent this message today:

Join Just Food and more than 100 other food and farming organizations, writers, educators, and chefs that are urging Congressional representatives to support a federal Food and Farm Bill that will end hunger, promote health, and support strong, regional farm and food economies.

The Farm Bill–or what food justice advocates more appropriately call this wide-reaching legislation as the “Food and Farm Bill”–was initially scheduled for completion in 2012, but is right now being negotiated behind closed doors without public input as part of the deficit-agreement in the congressional Super Committee process. This will deprive the country of a once in every five year opportunity to reform the nation’s food system.

The NYC Food and Farm Bill Working Group has sent the NYC Food & Farm Bill Principles and Why NYC Cares statements to key legislators on the Congressional Super Committee and House and Senate Agriculture Committees, who right now are making decisions on the next Food and Farm Bill without the democratic participation of the people.

1 jug Cider-locally grown and produced. UV’d, refrigerate when you get home. If you are not going to use the Cider right away, freeze for later use.
1 jar Stoneledge Farm Apple Sauce. 100% local Fruit, no sugar added. Peter felt that the Stoneledge Farm Apple Sauce would be a perfect addition to the last Fruit Share and just in time for Thanksgiving.

Farmer’s Note, November 21st Fruit Share

Dear CSA Member

What a season we have all endured. The farm has been sustained with the support and commitment of the CSA members and we can not express completely our sincere gratitude. As farmers we know the power of nature and respect both the devastation and also the blessings that are part of working within the natural world.

Seed catalogs arrive every day and we are placing orders for supplies needed for the spring. The fields are covered with a Winter Rye cover crop. The garlic is planted and waiting for the spring.

As we look forward to the upcoming season we are filled with a sense of gratitude and commitment to our CSA members and renewed understanding of what it means to be a CSA farm.

If you plan on ordering any turkeys or CSA extras for pick-up next Tuesday, November 22nd, orders must be placed by tonight. Items will be delivered to the Yorkville CSA location.

News about the Turkeys!
The Turkeys are here! This year, once again, Stonewood DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH turkeys in the SMALLER SIZES that we ordered for you. I am sorry but we had to give some of you birds a bit larger than you asked for. We had to give about an extra pound to all the people who ordered under 16 pounds. For everyone who wrote us notes about special sizes, we did our best to give you what you asked for.
The extra birds we have left now for any late plans are between 16.75 and 17.9 pounds. We have made these available on our website, under Turkeys, All Natural -SWF.
We have assigned all the birds so , so you can reply to this email with inquiries. There may also be some smaller Uncle Broc’s pastured turkeys, but we are not sure about the total number or weights, so orders will be honored in the sequence received.

Thanksgiving Meal Ideas:

Keep the hungry hoards happy while the Turkey cooks with a cheese platter built from our great selection of local cheeses. Why go to Murray’s when you can get Kunik from us, delivered with your turkey? We also have a wide selection of soft and hard cheeses from goat, sheep and raw cow’s milk. Please let us know if you have questions, or want sampler ideas!
Kick your stuffing up a notch with 8-grain 3-seed bread crumbs – order a loaf and let it get a little stale. Under Bread, Hearth baked.
Add a flavorful chutney to your cheese spread or stuffing for a complex flavor. Under Jams and Chutneys.
Add a bottle of Putney Bubbly Sparkling Cider – pure sparkling cider with no additives. In a wine bottle, to dress up the kids’ table! Under Juice, Sparkling!
Make a lamb meatball appetizer, or toss some into lasagna for an Italian Thanksgiving! Barbara at Argyllshire is offering her lamb sausage on sale for the holiday – get them while they last! Under Lamb – Grass Fed and Finished -AF
Put out a bowl of Battenkill Crumble, a tasty snack that is sure to satisfy without filling you up! Under Energy Bars.
Cut up a delicious smoked Kielbasa for crackers and cheese. We have both beef and pork.
Make devilled eggs with a dozen Farm Fresh Eggs!
Put out a tube of liverwurst with your cheeses! Available under Beef, Grass Fed and Finished – LWF. You can request only one tube in the special instructions.

Nearing the End of the Season

Dear CSA Member,

We are getting ready for our last Fruit Share distribution of the 2011 season on Monday, November 21. If you would like to place a Market Place order to be delivered with this last Fruit Share delivery, please go to the farm website and place your order as early this week as possible. There are a couple of items that are running a bit low. It will help us get the orders packed without too much of a last minute rush.

I have placed directions to order a 2012 CSA Share and also a Market Place order on the farm website www.stoneledgefarmny.org under the Farm Blog heading. We are using a new internet programming provider this season and every member will need to register as a new member the first time.

So for the time being, you won’t see our group listed on Stoneledge’s site when you go to sign up for next year. We’re talking to a few possibilities, but please let us know if you have any suggestions (e.g. your church, your child’s school, etc.)

1 bag of Bosc Pears and Cameo Apples

Fuji Apples are my favorite late fall apple. Crisp, juicy. Great for eating and cooking. If you have apples that you want to store away, Fuji will keep in the refrigerator until spring. They almost seem to get sweeter as they store.

Cameo is an attractive eating apple. Sweet, juicy with a beautiful color.

Farmer’s Note, November 7th Fruit Share

Please note: As of now (Friday 11/4/11) the Core Group is still waiting to finalize a new location for our weekly distributions for 2012. The new Farmigo registration system requires an address be entered, and so you will notice we are not yet listed when you go to register for next year’s share. We appreciate the patience of our members, as well as any tips on possible sites.

Dear CSA Member

Our online CSA 2012 Registration is now open. This is a new system and so everyone will need to register the first time as a new member. If you would like to order from the CSA Market Place you can order from the online store by registering there as well. You do not need to order a 2012 CSA share to order from the Market Place.

Three new products are now available on the Market Place: Apple Butter, Pear Butter and Raspberry Jam. They are all delicious. The Apple and Pear butters are made from local fruit. The Raspberry Jam-no seeds-is made from our own Certified Organic Raspberries. The holidays are right around the corner and many members have found honey, maple syrup, coffee and now, preserves, pickles, sauce and salsa make great gifts. Please order soon because there are only two deliveries remaining. The last delivery will be on November 21.

Fruit Share delivery this upcoming week November 7. The fruit is just beautiful. This week the first Fuji Apples, Cameo Apples, and Golden Delicious Apples and Bosc Pears. We are also sending a 1/2 gallon jug of award winning Eco-Apple, fresh, no preservatives added Apple Cider. It is freshly pressed and by NYS law, UV’d. It has a bright fresh taste and will need to be refrigerated when you take it home. If you are not going to use it right away, it will freeze “beautifully” says Elizabeth Ryan, the orchardist and cider maker.

We thought we would give cider a try. Let us know what you think.

Just a reminder that orders must be placed by this coming Wednesday, November 2nd, for delivery on Tuesday, November 8th. Pick-up will be at the Yorkville CSA location as usual. Below you’ll find product updates, as well as information about ordering turkeys for Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving Turkeys
We have special procedure for ordering Thanksgiving Turkeys. Since Stonewood Farm needs our order by Nov 8^th, we need our orders from you by Nov. 7^th (Monday). We also offer our full array of other products to round out your Thanksgiving meal, with a later deadline, so we have to separate the Turkey orders from the other products ordered. When you sign in, there will be a special link “Place my Thanksgiving Turkey Order,” which will take you to the dropdown bar which will only have Thanksgiving Turkey as a product. That will take you to all the Turkeys we have available for ordering. To edit this order, use 10-3-11 as the order you wish to Edit.
Any other items you’d like with your Turkey MUST BE ORDERED SEPARATELY, under the delivery date closest to Thanksgiving for your pickup site [11/22 for the Yorkville delivery].

Beth’s Farm Kitchen: has Apricot Jam back in stock! Try some Cranberry Sauce for your holiday meal!
Farmer Ground Flour: – reminder- is discontinuing baking mixes, and we have just a few left.
Lewis Waite Farm: just got our smoked pork back, and will be making bacon available! We are also restocked on all flavors of pork sausage links and bulk.
Sweet Spring Farm: Jeffrey is back in action making his wonder goat Chevre again, but his Feta won’t be available for a little bit as it needs to age. You can try the sheep milk feta from 3 Corner Field Farm, or the raw cow milk feta from West River Creamery.
West River Creamery: Pork, Garlic, and Parmesan sausage is back! You can find this under Lamb and Pork, Naturally raised.

This week is a Fruit Share delivery for members with a Fruit Share. This week there will be:

There will be one bag with Jona Gold and Bosc Pears and one bag with Mutsu and Empire Apples.

Bosc Pears-Elegant, russet pear. Very sweet with a distinctive crunch.
Empire Apples-Excellent eating. Apple developed in and for New York State orchards. Crisp, juicy and very sweet.
Jona Gold Apples-A large, crisp apple. It is juicy and aromatic and has a sweet-sour taste. Very good for cooking
Mutsu Apples-Also known as Crispin, the Mutsu is a large, green-yellow apple. First grown in Japan, it has become a favorite for fresh eating and also cooking.
